![]() A Letter From Brian Littrell
![]() ![]() DEAR BACKSTREET FANS EVERYWHERE!!
THIS IS AN ORIGINAL MESSAGE WRITTEN BY ME, BRIAN THOMAS LITTRELL, "THE" BROKSTER. IT IS WRITTEN STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART, AND I HOPE YOU FANS UNDERSTAND US AND OUR DECISION. SUPPORT ALEXANDER JAMES MCLEAN!!
WE LOVE YOU!
As most of you know, AJ McLean has admitted himself to a rehab clinic to help his excessive drinking problem and clinical depression. It's tough. Hes getting by...we all are. It's a tragedy. As for me, I'm holding up, I guess. I'm upset..we all are, of course. He's our brother, man. It's a big shock to all of us, as I'm sure it is to you too. He came to us the other day — it was the first time we heard him say, 'Guys, I have a problem,' . We had a long talk and decided that his getting help NOW was important. We figured this was the best for him. It's all about him being healthy.
I understand how hard it is for people to deal with this kind of thing, and I want to say sorry to you all who are struggling with this everyday. I understand how hard it is for the people dealing with the sickness, and for the loved ones worried sick about those who are struggling. I know that it's hard to get over something so serious, but we are hoping for the best. You never fully get over an experience like this, you know? A part of it always remains in your heart, no matter what. It's not somethng you can easily forget.
You fans are so supportive!! We love you so much!! We weren't sure whether or not we should come forward with the whole situation to our fans. We were worried how the fans would react and handle the news, but we felt compelled as a group to be honest with our fans and not let them down. The fans are great, but we were scared still at the same time. We trust that our fans have always stood by us, and we hope they will understand that this decision is absolutely necessary in order for AJ to be well, and his heath right now is the most important thing. You always have to worry about the feedback. AJ is our firend and our brother and we whole-heartedly support him during this difficult time. Fortunately, AJ has realized he can't solve his problems by himself. Before it was too late...we definitly made the right choice. Hopefully when he comes out he is able to be happy again. He's going to have stuff to sort out, but he'll be alright, and you will definilty see a change in attitude, and he could even go as far as to seem like a whole diffrent person. But always remember that in heart, Alex will always be Alex, and as long as you know him from the heart, he will always be the same, just happier. What's life worth living without being happy? If he's not happy doing what he does, than something is wrong and needs to be changed. You can't do what doesn't make you happy. You're responsible for YOU. You only have one life, and that's what people don't realize. Realizing what was wrong and what had to be done were the first steps towards him being well again. Now the rest is just up to him and how he percieves things to be. When you're trying to help someone who has a serious illness, they have to help themselves first before they can really receive help. They've gotta really want it.
He's always been strong, but when his grandmother died, he just kinda snapped. He was very close to her. We've been through a lot of trying times throughout our careers, and we've always made it through. This is one of those times where you can't just hang your head and cry it all away ...I know, because I've tried It's one of those times where you have to stick it out and be strong for everyone who is hurting from the whole experience. We need to use our experiences in positive ways and try to see the light. An experience is nothing but a way to learn somthing new, and there's always something good that can come out if it. I think honesly as long as you look for the light, the positive place, and can take a breath and look at the situation, then everything will be okay. Yeah, sure, there are down experiences, but you know, with AJ, all he needs is people by his side and time to think, which is what hes getting.
The music business is a very tough and stressful business. We hardly get time off, which results in no time ot ourselves or time to think. Not having time to yourself is hard, and can drive someone crazy. There were times when Alex would wake up and say to us "forget this! im not doing it anymore! i cant handle it guys! i just cant take it!" and he would just sit down and cry, and we woudl look on and not know what to do. The only thing we could do was offer our support and love and be there for him. Thats really all you can do. It's somthing he is going to have to walk though by himself. It's hard to see something like this eat away at your best friend....your brother. I'm just so relieved he woke up and looked at himself, at us, and at his fans, and realized he needed help.
Yes, we've always known he had a problem. He'd cry and say he couldnt go on. He would cry to us and cry out for our help and attention. We decided he needed help, and as fast as possible. The end of the tour wasn't soon enough. It needed to be NOW. We are sorry to all the fans who are disappointed in us for postponing our shows. We hope you all still love us and support us!! It was a tough decision, but one we had to make.
You fans are great...you're all the support AJ needs to be well. He's got A LOT of people standing behind him. All I know is that he is in all my thoughts and my prayers are with him. Let's just all pray that AJ can go back to being his old self again. He's just such a happy go-lucky guy...always making people smile...always being the best he can be...doing the best he can do. I mean, he's the happiest person in the world, with so much potential and so much going for him. He doesn't deserve this. No one does. Why AJ??? Why anyone?? WHY?? I wish I could understand, but I can't. Its not somthing that you can understand without being there, and it's amazing how quickly it happens. It's just a fact. That's just how it is i guess. I wish i could understand what he is going through and what I could do to help him....anything. I would bring down the moon and stars just to see him happy....just to see him smile and laugh and be truly happy again. But honestly, there's nothing we can do but stand by him and let him know we love him and that he's got a reason to smile. The rest he has to do on his own. It's an inside thing you have to conquer on your own.
It hurts inside. I'm not going to deny it. I'm sure a lot of you fans out there are hurting inside too, but just remember: He will get the help he needs, and there will be the 5 of us again and AJ will be back to his old self. If he knew he needed help, and could admit it, then he's ready, and he will pull through. AJ is a stong person. i believe in him...we all have to believe in him and keep praying ...
Support AJ! You know how much of a difficult time he is going through and he'll need your support 100% and more than that!! Hes in my prayers. i believe AJ will be okay!!
KTBPA!! We love you!!
Lots of love,
Brian and the Guys!!
